Twitter reactions: Ireland qualify for T20 World Cup Super 12s after thrashing West Indies by 9 wickets
Dominant Ireland qualified for the Super 12 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 and eliminated two-time champions West Indies after a thumping nine-wicket win at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval on Thursday.
Chasing 147 for victory, Ireland crossed the finish line in 17.3 overs. Paul Stirling (66 not out), Andrew Balbirnie (37) and Lorcan Tucker (45 not out) made the chase a cakewalk for the Irish side.
Leg-spinner Gareth Delany had earlier starred with the ball for Ireland, bagging 3-16 in his quota of four overs as West Indies were restricted to 146/5, with only Brandon King (62 off 48) playing a sensible knock.
“It’s a really proud day to be Irish”
“We had a really disappointing loss at this stage last year and did a lot of thinking, a lot of things changed back home. Different personnel, new coach, the way we wanted to play. To beat the two-time champions in a must-win game, I couldn’t be prouder. It’s a really proud day to be Irish,” Ireland skipper Andrew Balbirnie said in the post-match presentation.
“Once you put yourselves in that situation [the Super 12s] anything can happen. We are delighted. We just want to pit ourselves against the best in the world and who knows where that can take us?”
Here’s how Twitter reacted:
Well done, Ireland. That is another extraordinary result. But it is tinged with sadness at what has happened with the pioneers of T20 cricket. But c'est la vie.

West Indies first time not qualified for the World Cup.The players are happy playing T20 leagues all over the world but no pride playing for their own country. Very disappointing how Pooran has led the side #T20WorldCup2022

WI cricket needs to rediscover a common cause to bring individuals from different nations together. Maybe till then players can play for their respective countries. #justsaying #T20WorldCup
