RR captain Sanju Samson lauds Yuzvendra Chahal for creating new IPL record
During the IPL 2023 match between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata on Thursday (May 11), Yuzvendra Chahal showcased his exceptional bowling skills.
RR captain Sanju Samson opted to field first after winning the toss, and their bowlers delivered an outstanding performance, restricting KKR to 149/8. Among all, leg-spinner Chahal stood out with remarkable figures of 4/25, which also resulted in him breaking a significant IPL record.
With this outstanding performance, Chahal claimed the title of the highest wicket-taker in the history of the IPL. He surpassed the legendary Dwayne Bravo, former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder, who previously held the record with 183 wickets in 161 matches. Chahal’s achievement becomes even more remarkable as he achieved this milestone in just his 143rd match.
Following Chahal’s record-breaking performance, the Royals’ opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal also made history by scoring the fastest IPL fifty ever. He achieved this feat in just 13 balls, surpassing the previous record jointly held by KL Rahul and Pat Cummins, who both reached their half-centuries in 14 deliveries.
In the post-match interview, RR skipper Samson lavished rich praises on Chahal, saying it’s time for the world to call the leggie a legend.
After winning the Purple Cap with 27 wickets in 2022, Chahal is the leading wicket-taker for the Royals in the ongoing season with atleast 2 matches to go.
“I think it is time to give him the tag of legend. He’s been bowling like that for many years. Very grateful and lucky to have him in the franchise. You never need to speak to him. You just have to give him the ball and he knows what exactly to do,” said Samson.
“He’s a very brave bowler, who loves bowling under pressure. He bowls at the death as well. I am really very happy for him.”
