‘Brainless umpiring’: Fans fume after third umpire overturns no-ball decision during SRH vs LSG clash in IPL 2023

Controversial no-ball decision by third umpire during SRH vs LSG clash

The 58th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) saw a brief halt in play as it witnessed a huge controversy over a no-ball call from an on-field umpire which was later reversed by the third umpire.

The incident happened in the 19th over of the SRH innings when Avesh Khan bowled a full-toss delivery to Abdul Samad. The ball was initially called a no-ball by the on-field match official. However, LSG stand-in skipper Krunal Pandya challenged the decision, and the third umpire overturned it and ruled it a fair delivery. This judgement did not go down well with the SRH fans, who started to jeer and boo the third umpire. Some of the fans even threw a few objects at the LSG dugout, which led to a bit of stoppage in the game.

Although the play was resumed later, SRH lost their momentum due to the fiasco and could only manage to add nine runs in the last over. Notably, the Hyderabad-based team ended their innings with a total of 182 runs for the loss of six wickets. Heinrich Klaasen top-scored for his team with 47 runs off 29 balls. On the other hand, despite starting slow, LSG chased down the set target in 19.2 overs with seven wickets remaining. Prerak Mankad was the standout performer for the Lucknow-based team, as he scored a brilliant 64 runs off 45 deliveries. Meanwhile, Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran also contributed with quickfire 40 and 44 runs.

After the match, Klaasen expressed his disappointment with violent spectators and even called out the poor decision-making of umpires.

“Disappointed with the crowd to be honest, that’s not what you want. That also broke the momentum, not great umpiring either,” said Klaasen.

The fans were also unhappy with the match officials and took to social media to express their frustration. While some cricket enthusiasts termed the decision by the TV umpire ‘brainless’, some called it ‘ridiculous’. Former Aussie legend Tom Moody was surprised by the verdict as well.
