IPL 2023: Pragyan Ojha slams social media users abusing Shubman Gill and his sister Shahneel online
On May 21, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) faced a disappointing exit from the IPL following a six-wicket defeat against Gujarat Titans (GT). Despite an outstanding century by Virat Kohli, RCB fell short as GT opener, Shubman Gill, showcased his talent and crafted an unbeaten 104 runs. Gill’s remarkable innings left RCB fans heartbroken, but unfortunately, some individuals crossed the line by resorting to posting derogatory comments on social media directed at Shubman and his sister, Shahneel Gill.
Shahneel, an active presence on social media and a supportive sister, had commented on an Instagram post featuring Shubman celebrating his second IPL century, expressing her joy with the words, “My babyyy.” However, this innocent act soon became a catalyst for online hate. Distressed RCB fans even went to the extent of circulating Shahneel’s Instagram account among various groups, intensifying the level of hate and verbal abuse.
Seeing the trolls targeted towards Shubman and Shahneel, former Indian cricketer Pragyan Ojha took to Twitter and condemned the actions of the RCB fans.
“Trolls targeting someone’s family due to their team’s loss is deplorable and completely unacceptable. Such behaviour should never be condoned. Respect and empathy should prevail, regardless of sports outcomes,” Ojha captioned his post.

Social media users abusing Shahneel Gill to face police action
In the latest development, Shubman and Shahneel have found a supporter in form of Delhi Commissioner of Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal.
Maliwal has promised Shahneel of proper action against those who abused her online.
“Extremely shameful to see trollers abusing #ShubhmanGill’s sister just because the team they follow lost a match. Previously we had initiated action against people abusing # Virat Kohli’s daughter. DCW will take action against all those who have abused Gill’s sister as well. This shall not be tolerated,” tweeted the DCW chief.
