Twitter reactions: West Indies beat Bangladesh in a last-over thriller in Women’s World Cup

West Indies beat Bangladesh in Women's World Cup

In the 17th match of the ongoing Women’s World Cup 2022, West Indies‘ spinners successfully defended a mere 140 and avoided a major upset from Bangladesh with a four-run victory in a thrilling contest in Mount Maunganui on Friday.

Defending 141, West Indies’ bowlers restricted Bangladesh at 136 in 49.3 overs to win the contest by four runs. Hayley Matthews was the pick of the bowler, taking four wickets in 15 runs in her quota of 10 overs.

Afy Fletcher and skipper Stafanie Taylor also chipped in with three scalps to deny Bangladesh a well-deserved win. Fletcher picked up three wickets while conceding 29 runs in 10 overs, while Taylor bagged a three-fer for 29 runs in 9.3 overs.

Earlier, Shemaine Campbelle shined with the bat to take Windies to a respectable total. The wicketkeeper-batter stayed unbeaten at 53 off 107 deliveries to help West Indies post 140/9 on the board in their allotted 50 overs. For Bangladesh, Nahida Akter (2/23) and Salma Khatun (2/23) picked up two wickets each.

“The batters need to come to the party, and we are not consistent. We have to be consistent if we are to compete in this competition. Our batting order is long, we have to come together and win games. Aly (Fletcher) was brilliant. It was her first game back after birth, and she was brilliant. It is something we need to talk about as a batting group, where we are and where we need to be, there’s no two ways about it. We didn’t perform well since the India game, and that’s a concern for us, we can’t go through the tournament like this,” said Taylor after the match.
