ECB penalises Jason Roy with a two-match ban and £2,500 fine for ‘prejudicial’ behaviour
In the latest development, English opener Jason Roy has been fined £2,500 and handed a suspended two-match ban by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for his prejudicial behaviour.
The Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) – a body that hears disciplinary cases in the professional domestic game in England and Wales – has declared the sanctions after Roy himself admitted that he was conducted in a manner which may be prejudicial to the interests of cricket or may bring the game, the country’s cricket board and himself into disrepute.
Roy’s ban is for the upcoming two England matches for which he is eligible for selection but has been suspended for 12 months, dependent on good behaviour. The 31-year-old has also been asked to pay a fine of £2,500 by March 31.
“A Disciplinary Panel of the Cricket Discipline Commission has announced its sanction on Jason Roy after he admitted a charge of conducting himself in a manner which may be prejudicial to the interests of cricket or which may bring the game of cricket, the ECB and himself into disrepute, in breach of ECB Directive 3.3,” said ECB in an official statement.
“Following a full disciplinary hearing at which all available evidence was heard, the Disciplinary Panel ruled that Mr Roy should: (i) be suspended from the next two England matches for which he is eligible for selection, but that such suspension be suspended for 12 months dependent on good behaviour; and (ii) pay a fine of £2,500 by March 31 2022,” the statement added further.
Notably, Roy recently pulled out of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, citing bio-bubble fatigue and desire to spend time with his family following his stint with Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The right-handed batter was roped in by new franchise Gujarat Titans (GT) for INR 2 crore in the mega-auction held earlier this year.
