Twitter reactions: Marizanne Kapp steers South Africa to thrilling win over England in Women’s World Cup

South Africa beat England in Women's World Cup 2022

Marizanne Kapp‘s all-round effort helped South Africa to register a thrilling victory over England in the ongoing Women’s World Cup 2022 on Monday.

With the third straight loss, the defending champions’ World Cup hopes are now hanging by a thread. On the other hand, it was Proteas’ third consecutive victory which has put them at the second spot in the points table.

Bowling first, South Africa restricted England at 235/9 in their allotted 50 overs. Kapp bowled exceptionally well and went on to pick the five-wicket haul. She conceded 45 runs in her quota of 10 overs, including a maiden.

Tammy Beaumont and Amy Ellen Jones played handy knocks of 62 and 53 respectively to take England to a respectable total. The match went to the wire, where the Proteas managed to seal the victory in the final over of the innings.

Opener Laura Wolvaardt was the star with the bat, smashing a crucial 77 off 101 balls with the help of eight boundaries. Kapp, who dismantled the English batting unit, made her contribution with the willow as well. The senior all-rounder scored 32 off 42 balls as South Africa won the contest by three wickets.

In another match, Bangladesh pulled off a stunning victory against Pakistan to register their maiden win in the ongoing multi-team tournament.

Put to bat first, Bangladesh posted 234/7 in 50 overs, thanks to crucial knocks by opener Sharmin Akhter (44 off 55) and captain Nigar Sultana (46 off 64). For Pakistan, Nashra Sandhu was the pick of the bowlers, taking a three-wicket haul for 41 runs in her quota of 10 overs.

In reply, Pakistan only managed to reach 225/9, losing the game by only nine runs. Opener Sidra Ameen was the only major highlight in Pakistan’s innings. She smashed a brilliant century, but her incredible ton went in vain as other batters failed to carry the momentum. Ameen scored 104 off 140 deliveries with the help of eight boundaries before meeting an unfortunate run-out.

Fahima Khatun (3/38) and Rumana Ahmed (2/29) were the chief destroyers for Bangladesh bagging wickets at important stages to keep their side a step ahead in a thrilling contest.
