West Indies announce 14-member squad for Womens T20I series against Ireland

Cricket West Indies (CWI) selection panel has unveiled the 14-member squad for the upcoming Women’s T20 International (T20I) Series against Ireland, commencing on July 4 at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground. The squad features three promising young talents from the Under 19 circuit: Zaida James, Ashmini Munisar, and Djenaba Joseph.

Following their successful 2-0 victory in the preceding ODI series last week, the selectors have decided to retain the same squad for the T20I fixtures. Chief selector Ann Browne-John explained that the chosen players strike a fine balance between experienced campaigners and emerging talents.

The West Indies team will enter the T20I series with high spirits after securing a 2-0 triumph in the ODI leg, although one match was affected by rain and ended in a no-result. Led by captain Hayley Matthews and vice-captain Shemaine Campbelle, the squad will be playing their first set of T20I matches since their early exit from the T20 World Cup earlier this year.

All three T20I games are scheduled to take place at St Lucia’s Daren Sammy Cricket Ground. The series will kick off on Tuesday, July 4, followed by matches on July 6 and 8. The West Indies team will be eager to build on their recent successes and put on a strong display in front of their home crowd.

“The selection panel decided to retain the players who completed the ODI series. These players have shown form and performance which enabled the team to secure a series win, which the team has been striving for in recent times,” said Browne-John as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

“As we continue the rebuilding, we believe we have found a competent balance in mix of senior players and the younger players selected. It is in keeping with our ethos of preparing the next batch of West Indies women’s players, by combining the experienced and the newly capped players,” she added.

West Indies T20I squad: Hayley Matthews (captain), Shemaine Campbelle (vice-captain), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shamilia Connell, Chinelle Henry, Afy Fletcher, Cherry Ann Fraser, Shabika Gajnabi, Zaida James, Djenaba Joseph, Qiana Joseph, Ashmini Munisar, Stafanie Taylor, Rashada Williams
