Ashes 2023 [WATCH]: Jonny Bairstow takes a one-handed blinder to dismiss Mitchell Marsh in Manchester Test
In the ongoing Ashes 2023 series between England and Australia, the English wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow has faced challenges behind the stumps. However, during the opening day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester, Bairstow delighted fans with a breathtaking one-handed catch to dismiss the Aussie all-rounder Mitchell Marsh.
The incident occurred in the 63rd over of the Australian innings when Chris Woakes bowled a delivery that just slightly shaped away, causing the outside edge of Marsh’s bat. The ball flew rapidly behind the wickets, but Bairstow’s lightning-fast reflexes allowed him to dive to his right and grab the catch, just before the ball could touch the ground.
Former English captain Nasser Hussain, who was in the commentary box, praised Bairstow’s spectacular effort, saying, “Oh, that’s a beauty! What a moment that is. A man that has been under immense pressure has taken a worthy catch. Brilliant from Bairstow.”

The dismissal proved crucial, as Marsh, who had displayed an impressive performance by scoring 51 runs off 60 deliveries, was sent back to the pavilion. Notably, in a previous Test, Marsh had hammered a remarkable century at Headingley after a four-year hiatus from Test cricket. However, Woakes’ impressive twin dismissals, including Cameron Green, turned the tide in England’s favor.
Bairstow, amidst the pressure on his wicketkeeping skills, ended up taking three catches as England managed to restrict Australia to 299/8 by stumps on the opening day. Woakes was the standout performer for England, claiming four wickets for 52 runs in his 19 overs.
Additionally, Stuart Broad also bagged two wickets and reached a special benchmark of becoming only the fifth bowler in Test history to enter 600-wickets club. Broad became only the second pacer to accomplish such milestone after his teammate James Anderson.
