‘I wouldn’t want my kids to be around that’: Usman Khawaja opens up on the Lord’s Long Room abuse – Ashes 2023

The Ashes 2023 between England and Australia has made it to the headlines for so many controversial reasons. The Aussie opener Usman Khawaja was also part of one such incident where he indulged in a heated altercation with one of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) members in the long room of the iconic Lord’s during the second Test.

It is worth mentioning that the incident involving Khawaja flared up after the controversial dismissal of Jonny Bairstow on Day 5 of the Lord’s Test when the Aussie team was on their way back to the dressing room. Alongside Khwaja, Australia’s David Warner was seen engaging in a verbal spat with the English supporter as well. However, the two were later separated by the security officials.

The event sparked a massive debate among cricket enthusiasts, and many condemned the behaviour of the English fan. The MCC even suspended three of its members involved in the misconduct.

Khwaja now himself has openly talked about the abuse at the Lord’s and lambasted the English fans for their poor behaviour. The left-handed batter even revealed a cuss word that his fellow teammate Travis Head was subjected to during the first Ashes 2023 Test at Edgbaston and reckoned that he wouldn’t ever want his kids to be around such an awful and rough environment.

“I mean, they’re rough. If you talk about it to England guys, they say we are equally as rough when (they go to Australia). I don’t agree with it either way. I don’t think it’s the right thing to do. Personally if I am coming to the cricket and watching the cricket, I wouldn’t want my kids to be around that. If I saw that I would 100 per cent make a complaint or just leave,” Khawaja was quoted saying by ESPNcricinfo.

“I think some of the stuff can be pretty poor. Over at Edgbaston they were calling Travis Head a C, U you know what. I’m like I can’t believe that you can actually say that in a public domain anywhere. It can be a little disappointing at times, and I think we can take it too far in Australia,” he added.
