Sunil Gavaskar names his India XI for the ICC World Test Championship final
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Tuesday, announced the squad of Team India for the highly-anticipated World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia. Notably, the Indian team will be facing Australia in the summit clash, starting June 7 at The Oval in London. It is Team India’s second successive WTC final, having played the inaugural edition’s final against New Zealand, where the Black Caps emerged victorious.
As the much-awaited fixture is getting closer, Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has picked his India XI. In a chat show on Star Sports, Gavaskar named his playing XI, featuring five specialised batters, two spin all-rounders and three pace bowlers, along with a wicketkeeper-batter.
For the openers, Gavaskar went with Rohit Sharma alongside Shubman Gill. Similarly, he picked the experienced trio of Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane for the middle order. It is worth mentioning that Rahane has made his comeback to the Indian Test side after a long time. His consistency in the Ranji Trophy and the unavailability of Shreyas Iyer were the major factors behind the selection.
Not to mention, Rahane is currently representing MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and has impressed one and all with his vintage avatar.
Further, Gavaskar named KL Rahul as the wicketkeeper and Ravindra Jadeja-Ravinchandran Ashwin as his two spin cum all-rounders. It is noteworthy that in the absence of Rishabh Pant, BCCI has picked KS Bharat and Rahul as wicketkeepers.
When it comes to the fast bowling unit, Team India will definitely miss the services of Jasprit Bumrah, who is also unavailable following his injury. Gavaskar, meanwhile, went with Mohammed Shami, Jaydev Unadkat and Mohammad Siraj to fulfil his team’s fast bowling requirements.
Sunil Gavaskar’s XI of Team India for the WTC Final:
Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, KL Rahul (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jaydev Unadkat, Mohammed Shami, Mohammad Siraj.
