WATCH: Dinesh Bana emulate MS Dhoni; wins U-19 World Cup for India with a six

MS Dhoni, Dinesh Bana

A dominant India won the 2022 U-19 World Cup in Antigua on Saturday, beating England by four wickets in the summit clash of an extraordinary campaign that almost got derailed due to COVID-19. The title triumph was India’s fifth in ICC U-19 World Cup history.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Bana made the winning moment special for India as he completed India’s chase with a six off James Sales. Coming in to bat after the fall of the sixth wicket, Bana upped the ante and hit an unbeaten 13 off just five balls. His cameo included two back-to-back sixes.

The second hit over the long-on boundary steered India past the winning total. Bana’s six took the fans back to the memory lane of the 2011 ODI World Cup final, where the then India skipper MS Dhoni won his side the tournament with a massive six off Sri Lankan pacer Nuwan Kulasekara.

As soon Dinesh hit the winning runs, congratulations around the world started coming, and Twitter went into a frenzy, reminding them of Dhoni’s iconic six.

Earlier, after winning the toss in the big final, England captain Tom Prest opted to bat first to avoid the “scoreboard pressure” during the chase. India did the next best thing: bundled out the opposition for just 189 in 44.5 overs and reached the finish line with 14 balls to spare.
