Veteran Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan has called time on his illustrious international career, announcing his retirement from all forms of cricket on Saturday, August 24. The 38-year-old leaves the game with a sense of contentment after representing India in all three formats.

Shikhar Dhawan’s cricketing career

Dhawan, who made his international debut in 2010, represented India in 34 Tests, 167 ODIs, and 68 T20Is. Despite falling out of favour in recent years due to inconsistent form and the emergence of younger talents, Dhawan’s contributions to Indian cricket will be remembered for years to come.

His most significant impact came in the ODI format, where he amassed 6793 runs at an impressive average of 44.11, including 17 centuries and 39 half-centuries. In Tests, Dhawan scored 2315 runs at an average of 40.61, with seven centuries to his name.

Renowned for his aggressive batting style, Dhawan was a delight to watch at his peak. He also made a significant impact in the Indian Premier League (IPL), scoring 6769 runs in 222 matches, including two centuries and 51 half-centuries. Dhawan was part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) team that won the IPL title in 2016 and has also captained Delhi Capitals (DC) and Punjab Kings (PBKS).

Shikhar Dhawan’s IPL future

Dhawan’s retirement from international cricket raises questions about his future in the IPL. He has struggled with injuries in recent times, which could affect his decision on whether to continue playing in the league. While Preity Zinta co-owned PBKS may not retain him for the upcoming season, other franchises could be interested in acquiring his services if he regains full fitness.
