Indian captain Rohit Sharma delivered a masterful performance, scoring a brilliant half-century on a challenging surface at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, against Ireland to kick off their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign on a strong note. The Men in Blue comfortably chased down the 97-run target, registering an eight-wicket win in just 12.2 overs to seal their opening contest of the tournament.

Masterful batting on a tough track

On a pitch where most batters struggled to score, Rohit played a composed and calculated innings, taking necessary risks to reach his fifty. Despite the challenging conditions, he managed to anchor India’s innings effectively. He retired hurt after reaching his half-century, having laid a solid foundation for the chase.

Rohit Sharma’s injury scare and resilience

However, during the 9th over of the run-chase, bowled by left-arm speedster Josh Little, Rohit sustained a light blow on his arm. Attempting a scoop shot, he missed the delivery, which struck him near the shoulder. Despite the injury, Rohit continued to bat, hitting two consecutive sixes and reaching his half-century with a four in the next over. Nevertheless, the injury forced him to retire hurt after the 10th over.

Successful chase despite setback

Rohit’s departure brought Suryakumar Yadav to the crease. Although Suryakumar was dismissed for just 2 off four deliveries, India remained untroubled in their chase. Rishabh Pant took charge, finishing unbeaten on 36, and sealing the victory with a stylish reverse six off pacer Barry McCarthy.

Post-match remarks on injury and pitch conditions

Rohit later revealed during the post-match presentation that his injury was not serious, stating, “Yeah, just a little sore (the arm),” The match’s venue, Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, faced criticism for its unpredictable bounce and slow outfield. Rohit commented on the conditions, stating, “I mentioned at the toss that we were quite unsure of what to expect from the pitch. Playing on a five-month-old surface posed its challenges, and I don’t think the wicket settled down even when we batted second,”
