PAK vs IRE [WATCH]: Shaheen Afridi, Usman Khan crash into each other while attempting to catch Mark Adair’s hit | T20 World Cup
The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 match between Pakistan and Ireland at Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill on Sunday (June 16) witnessed a bizarre and dramatic fielding incident.
Collision and remarkable catch: Shaheen Afridi and Usman Khan
On the fourth ball of the 14th over, bowled by Imad Wasim, Ireland’s Mark Adair, attempting to play an aggressive shot, sent the ball soaring high towards the onside. The shot seemed destined to land safely, but two Pakistani fielders, Usman Khan and Shaheen Afridi, sprinted from long-on and mid-wicket, respectively, to claim the catch.
As both Usman and Shaheen closed in on the ball, a lack of clear communication led to a dangerous collision between the two. Despite the jarring impact, Shaheen showcased his exceptional reflexes and determination by clinging onto the catch. The crowd held its breath as the players collided, but relief washed over the stadium when it was clear that neither had sustained serious injuries. Shaheen’s ability to secure the catch under such challenging circumstances was a testament to his skill and composure.

Pakistan’s early dominance with the ball
Earlier, Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam won the toss and opted to field first. Shaheen, known for his knack for taking early wickets, struck twice in his very first over, leaving Ireland in a precarious position at two for two. His pace and accuracy set the tone for Pakistan’s bowling attack, putting immense pressure on the Irish batting lineup.
Following Afridi’s early breakthroughs, Mohammad Amir entered the fray and continued to dismantle Ireland’s top order. He claimed the crucial wicket of Ireland’s captain Paul Stirling, who managed to score just one run before being dismissed. Amir’s precise bowling further compounded Ireland’s woes, as they found themselves struggling at 32 for six at one stage.
Imad Wasim’s spin magic
Imad proved to be the pick of the bowlers, delivering a masterclass in spin bowling. He bowled with remarkable economy and control, taking three wickets in his four overs while conceding a mere eight runs. Imad’s spell included the crucial wicket of Gareth Delany, who was the lone fighter for Ireland with a brisk 31 off 19 deliveries before falling in the 12th over. Ireland’s innings never really gained momentum, and they were restricted to 106/9 in their 20 overs.
