5 cricketers who made their T20I debut in the same year as Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah but faded away quickly

Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah, regarded as two of the brightest stars in the modern-day cricket, have solidified their positions as match-winners across all formats for Team India. While Pandya’s dynamic all-round skills and finishing ability have made him a force to be reckoned with, Bumrah’s impeccable accuracy and game-changing spells have earned him accolades worldwide.

Both cricketers made their T20I debuts on January 26, 2016, in an encounter against Australia in Adelaide, and have since soared to great heights. However, amidst their meteoric rise, there are some cricketers who also made their T20I debuts in the same year but ultimately faded away, unable to leave a lasting impact like their illustrious counterparts.

Let’s have a look at five such cricketers could not make it big like Hardik and Bumrah in T20Is:

Rishi Dhawan

Rishi Dhawan, who began his cricketing journey as an opening batter in junior cricket, successfully transitioned into a seam-bowling allrounder. His impressive performances at the domestic level for Himachal Pradesh earned him a call-up to the national team. Dhawan made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe on June 18, 2016. Despite scoring a solitary run and taking a wicket for 42 runs in four overs, Dhawan didn’t get another opportunity to play in the shortest format for Team India.

Pawan Negi

Pawan Negi made his debut for India during the 2016 Asia Cup in a match against the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He delivered a solid performance, taking one wicket for 16 runs in three overs. However, despite his promising start to his international career, the left-arm spinner didn’t receive any further opportunities to represent the national team in T20Is.

Dhawal Kulkarni

Dhawal Kulkarni played his first T20I match for India on June 20, 2016, during the team’s tour of Zimbabwe. He claimed a single wicket for 32 runs in four overs in that game and also played the subsequent T20I, where he picked up two wickets. Unfortunately, Kulkarni was not provided with another opportunity to showcase his skills in the shortest format for Team India.

Mandeep Singh

Mandeep Singh, a hard-hitting top-order batter, featured in all three matches during India’s tour of Zimbabwe in 2016. He scored 31 runs in his debut game on June 18 and followed it up with a remarkable unbeaten half-century (52) in the second match. However, he was dismissed for just 4 runs in the third T20I. Despite his decent performances in his debut series, Mandeep didn’t receive any further chances to represent India in T20Is.

Barinder Sran

Barinder Sran, like Dhawal Kulkarni, made his debut in the second T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare on June 20, 2016. Sran had a memorable debut as he recorded the best bowling figures on T20I debut by an Indian player, taking four wickets for just 10 runs in four overs. He also played in the following T20I but wasn’t given another opportunity to represent India in the shortest format.
