ODI World Cup 2023: Former selector Kris Srikkanth picks two players who should not be part of India’s squad
The 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup is the upcoming mega project in the cricketing world. The last three editions of the global showpiece event were won by host teams. So the pressure will be on the Men in Blue to continue the trend as India will be hosting the upcoming ODI world cup.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also started the preparations as they recently named 20 probables for the muli-team event. The apex board wants to rotate the players in the upcoming bilateral series to obtain a ‘core team’. Regarding the same, former India selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth named two big players who did not make a way in his India’s ODI World Cup squad list.
In a conversation with Star Sports, the 1983 World Cup winner spoke in detail about the probables list and reckoned that Shubman Gill and Shardul Thakur should be out of the squad. Notably, Shubman has done relatively well in whatever chances he’s given in the absence of Rohit Sharma, while Shardul was not part of the recently concluded ODI series against Bangladesh.
“Two of the players won’t be in my list, Shubman Gill and Shardul Thakur,” said Srikkanth before adding that his list would feature four pacers and bank on match-winners who can take the game away single-handedly.
“If you want my medium pacers, they would be (Jasprit) Bumrah, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammed Siraj. Four medium pacers are enough. (Mohammed) Shami would be so-so. I’m speaking as a chairman of selectors and not a fan, I would instead bring in (Deepak) Hooda. And I believe these are the guys that will win matches, what do you want? You want to win matches, you need horses like Yusuf Pathan, who will win you matches single-handedly,” Srikkanth added.
