Rohit Sharma endorses Ravichandran Ashwin’s advice for an early start in ODI World Cup

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has echoed Ravichandran Ashwin‘s views regarding a slight change in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, scheduled to take place in India later this year. Ashwin came up with the idea of starting the Day/Night games early in order to negate the dew factor.

Notably, the 50-over tournament will be played in India in October-November and due to which the, concerns have been raised about the possibility of the toss proving to be a decisive factor because of the dew.

Speaking about the suggestion by Ashwin, captain Rohit said it’s a good idea, but he wasn’t sure about its possibility of such, as the broadcasters are supposed to decide the timings of games. Rohit said the contest between the two sides should be fair, and no team should get the advantage because of the dew.

“It’s a good idea. It’s a World Cup, so you don’t want to compromise too much on the toss factor, you want to completely take that away. I like that idea of an early start. But I don’t know if that’s possible. The broadcasters will decide what time the game has to start. But ideally, you don’t want any sort of advantages in the game. You want to see good cricket being played without one having an advantage of batting under lights with the dew. But those are the things that are not in your control. But I like the idea of an early start,” said Rohit ahead of the first ODI against New Zealand.

Earlier, Ashwin had argued that the matches in the global showpiece event should ideally start from 11:30 am, and people would still tune in to watch the games, considering it’s the World Cup.

“People will bring up television viewers and broadcasters and say that people won’t latch on and watch at that time, but would they not latch on to World Cup matches? The ICC knows very well that there will be dew, so let’s advance the game, and if we start at 11.30 am, the dew factor won’t come into the game, and why not? Won’t all cricket fans prioritise the World Cup and watch matches at 11.30? “ Ashwin had said.
