Scotland announces 15-member squad for T20 World Cup 2022
Cricket Scotland (CS), on Thursday, announced their 15-player squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in Australia from October 16 to November 13.
Richie Berrington will lead the side, which includes Chris Greaves, who debuted in the previous edition of the T20 World Cup. Matt Cross will be the deputy of Berrington and also keep wickets for his side.
All-rounder Brandon McMullen has earned his maiden call-up to the national tea, and the pace-bowling duo of Brad Wheal and Josh Davey, who weren’t part of the white-ball series against New Zealand in July, have also been called back into the squad for the multi-team event.
McMullen has been included on the back of his impressive performances at the Regional series and A team matches. Similarly, Wheal finished fifth on the top wicket-takers table at this season’s Vitality Blast with 22 scalps in 13 games while representing champions Hampshire.
When it comes to Davey, he represented Somerset across formats this summer and finished with 15 wickets in 11 matches in the Blast. Not to mention, Davey was the leading wicket-taker for the Scottish side in the last year’s World T20, finishing with nine wickets in five games.
“It was good to see other younger players put performances under pressure, and I have no doubt their opportunities will come in the not-too-distant future. For us to have 40 plus names on the table for selection is testament to the system growing the talent base and providing the senior Men’s team with options,” said Scotland men’s Head Coach Shane Burger as quoted by CricketScotland.com.
“We are very pleased and excited to announce our 15 players for the T20 World Cup. We have selected 15 that we believe will make the desired impact we are looking for. For those players who are not going to the world cup, we look forward to seeing them challenging for international honours in years to come. The squad has a blend of youth and experience alongside locally based players and County representatives. The balance of the team and chemistry is crucial to contributing to performances at the World Cup. We believe we have a good mix of the above and have selected players that are in form and can perform under pressure,” added Burger.
Scotland will start their campaign against West Indies on October 17. The Scottish side will then meet Ireland and Zimbabwe on October 19 and 21, respectively. All games will take place at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart.
