Twitter reactions: Yash Dhull, bowlers star in India’s triumph over South Africa in U19 World Cup 2022
Team India started their campaign in the ongoing Under-19 World Cup with a 45-run win over South Africa at Providence Stadium in Guyana on Saturday.
Captain Yash Dhull and spinner Vicky Ostwal were the star performers for their side.
Put to bat first, India had a terrible start with Proteas seamer Aphiwe Mnyanda dismissing both openers Harnoor Singh (1) and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (5) early.
After the shaky start, skipper Dhull and his deputy Shaik Rasheed joined hands to take India out of hot water. The duo added a crucial 71-run stand for the third wicket before Liam Alder broke the partnership by sending Rasheed back on 31.
While the wickets kept falling after short partnerships, Dhull looked set to reach the triple-figure. However, a run-out in the 39th over ended his brilliant knock of 82 runs off 100 deliveries. All-rounder Kaushal Tambe chipped in with a valuable 44-ball 35 to take India to 232.
In reply, South Africa fell comfortably short after getting bundled out for just 187. The Proteas lost their opener, Ethan John Cunningham, for a duck in the very first over bowled by Rajvardhan Hangargekar. But Valintine Kitime and Dewald Brevis inspired a comeback by adding 58 runs for the second wicket. Vicky then provided his team a breakthrough as he removed Kitime (25). The Indian left-arm spinner didn’t just stop there as he dismissed GJ Maree (8) as well to reduce South Africa at 83/3.
Brevis and captain George Van Heerden then partnered to put things in control. The pair went on to stitch a 55-run partnership for the fourth wicket. But Raj Bawa helped India make another comeback after sending back well-set Brevis (65). The dismissal of South Africa’s number three opened the flood gates as from 138/4, they got bowled out for 187, losing the contest by 45 runs.
For India, Vicky picked up five wickets for 28 runs in his quota of 10 overs, while Raj claimed four scalps for 47 in 6.4 overs.
