“I really want to win the World Cup”: Indian skipper Rohit Sharma reveals his retirement plans
Rohit Sharma is currently representing Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. This season, however, the franchise underwent a leadership change with Hardik Pandya taking over the captaincy from Rohit.
Notably, Rohit led the Indian team to a strong showing in the ODI World Cup 2023.
Unfortunately, India fell short against Australia in the final. After this loss, much speculation surrounded Rohit’s future captaincy plans for the national team.
India’s ODI World Cup 2023 loss
Rohit displayed phenomenal form throughout the ODI World Cup 2023. He embraced a new role as an aggressive top-order batter tasked with accelerating the innings from the outset. This approach proved highly successful, as he amassed 597 runs in 11 matches with a strike rate of 125. His leadership as captain also proved successful, guiding the team to an undefeated run of 10 matches and a place in the finals. This dominant performance cemented Rohit’s reputation as a world-class batter and a strong leader on the international stage.
Rohit Sharma named India captain for T20 World Cup 2024
Despite India’s loss in the ODI World Cup 2023 final, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed Rohit as India’s captain for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, co-hosted by the United States and the West Indies. This news came shortly after Rohit’s remarkable feat in the T20I series against Afghanistan, where he smashed his fifth T20 international century, becoming the first player ever to achieve this milestone.

Rohit opens up about his future plans
Rohit has emphatically quashed any notions of imminent retirement, citing his current peak form. He has expressed a fervent desire to extend his playing career for several more years. His primary objective remains leading India to World Cup glory, but acknowledging the uncertainties of the future, he has also set his sights on guiding the team to victory in the forthcoming WTC final scheduled for 2025.
“I haven’t really thought about retirement. But, I don’t know where life takes you. I am still playing well at this point in time – so I am thinking I am going to continue for a few more years and then, I don’t know. I really want to win the World Cup and there is a WTC final in 2025, hopefully India makes it,” said Rohit on Gaurav Kapoor’s show.
