Twitter reactions: Nat Sciver-Brunt, Sophie Ecclestone shine as England beat India in 1st Women’s T20I
In a thrilling encounter at Wankhede Stadium, England Women emerged victorious over India Women by 38 runs in the first T20I of the England Women tour of India 2023. The Indian skipper, Harmanpreet Kaur, opted to bowl after winning the toss, setting the stage for an exciting contest.
Nat Sciver-Brunt takes England to a formidable total
England Women displayed an impressive batting performance, posting a formidable total of 197/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Danielle Wyatt was the star of the innings, contributing a blistering 75 runs off 47 balls, including 8 fours and 2 sixes. Nat Sciver-Brunt also played a crucial role with a rapid 77 off 53 deliveries, featuring 13 fours.
Renuka Thakur stood out as the pick of the Indian bowlers, claiming 3 wickets for 27 runs in her 4 overs. Shreyanka Patil also made an impact with 2 wickets, but England’s strong batting display propelled them to a challenging target.

Sophie Ecclestone sizzles with the ball
In response, India Women fought valiantly but fell short of the target, finishing their innings at 159/6. Shafali Verma played a brilliant knock, scoring 52 runs off 42 balls, but the team struggled to maintain the required run rate. Sophie Ecclestone shone with the ball for England, taking 3 crucial wickets for just 15 runs in her 4 overs.
Despite contributions from Shafali Verma, Harmanpreet and Richa Ghosh, India couldn’t match the required scoring rate, and England’s bowlers held their nerve to secure a 38-run victory.

Always just an utter joy to watch Sophie Ecclestone bowl. Like Shane Warne, every ball is gripping – something happening is always around the corner. Tremendous.

Sophie Ecclestone is to Women’s cricket what Mitchell Santner is to Men’s.

A good start from England but nothing to get complacent about. Nat Sciver-Brunt did the hard yards with the bat, and Sophie Ecclestone did them with the ball. Some of the other batters look hopelessly out of touch. #INDvENG
