Tamim Iqbal steps down as Bangladesh ODI captain; ruled out of Asia Cup due to injury
Tamim Iqbal, the seasoned Bangladeshi cricketer, will be absent from the upcoming Asia Cup due to a back injury. The injury has unfortunately ruled him out of the prestigious tournament, posing a significant setback for the national team.
Further, Tamim has also decided to step down from his position as Bangladesh’s ODI captain. This decision comes less than a month after he initially announced his retirement from international cricket. Notably, Tamim had retired on July 6, but following a request from Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to reconsider, he reversed his decision and chose to continue playing for the national team.

Tamim cited his ongoing back injury as a significant concern that influenced his choice to resign as the lea. He disclosed that despite taking medical measures the injury remains unpredictable, making it difficult for him to lead the team effectively. Given his unwavering dedication to the team’s success, the veteran batter reckoned that stepping down is the most responsible decision to ensure he can contribute as a player whenever opportunities arise.
After informing Prime Minister Hasina of his decision to relinquish the captaincy, Tamim engaged in a comprehensive discussion with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hassan and Cricket Operations Chairman Jalal Yunus at Hassan’s residence. The meeting aimed to address the implications of his resignation and strategize the team’s leadership for the future.
Although missing the Asia Cup, Tamim is now focused on preparing for the home ODI series against New Zealand, which commences on September 21. This series comes between the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup, offering him the opportunity to contribute to the team’s performance on the field as a player.
“I believe injury is an issue. I took an injection [on July 28], but it is like a hit or miss. I have told them [the board] about the problem. I have always helped the team over everything else. So keeping that in mind, stepping down is the best possible decision. I want to give my best as a player whenever the opportunity comes. I have spoken to the prime minister, and she understood,” said Tamim as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
