Australian star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell ruled out of the T20I series against South Africa; replacement announced

Glenn Maxwell

In a major setback for the Australian cricket team, star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out of the upcoming T20I series against South Africa due to an ankle injury. Maxwell sustained the injury during a practice session in Durban ahead of the opening encounter. Although Maxwell’s injury is not very serious, the decision to rest him has been taken as a precautionary measure in view of the impending ODI World Cup 2023 in India.

It is worth mentioning that Maxwell was already scheduled to depart from the tour soon after the conclusion of the T20I series for the birth of his first child. However, the injury forced him to a much early exit, and the 34-year-old Aussie cricketer had to return to his home even before the commencement of the series.

Australia will now be hoping for the speedy recovery of Maxwell ahead of the India tour and World Cup, provided that he is one of their key players with a decent record on Indian soil. The  Australian chief selector, Tony Dodemaide, conveyed something similar as he expressed optimism about Maxwell’s recovery.

“We are taking a precautionary approach, given Glenn was heading home next week in any case. We will monitor Glenn’s recovery with a view to him being available for the three-match ODI series in India in advance of the World Cup,” said Dodemaide.

As far as Australia’s tour of South Africa is concerned, the T20I series between the two sides is set to feature three matches, followed by a five-match ODI leg. All three T20Is are scheduled to be played at the same venue over a span of five days. The squads of both teams were previously announced, but Maxwell’s injury has necessitated a replacement in the Australian side.

CA announces Matthew Wade as injured Glenn Maxwell’s replacement

Cricket Australia has revealed that Matthew Wade will step in as Maxwell’s replacement for the series. Wade recently represented the London Spirits in The Hundred 2023 tournament and brings a wealth of experience to the team. His inclusion aims to bolster Australia’s lineup and maintain their competitive edge against a formidable South African side as they gear up to take on the Proteas side in the first T20I on Wednesday (August 30).
