Twitter reactions: Josh Philippe, Ben Dwarshuis shine as Sydney Sixers crush Melbourne Renegades at SCG
In the 18th match of the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) 2022-23, Sydney Sixers thrashed Melbourne Renegades at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday. It was Sixers’ third victory in the tournament, which put them in fourth place in the points table.
After being asked to bat first, the Sixers posted a competitive 149/8 on the board, thanks to a brilliant knock from opening batter Josh Philippe. The wicketkeeper-batter held one end and kept the run-rate high. He smashed a fabulous half-century and scored 55 off 40 deliveries with the help of five fours and a couple of sixes.
Apart from Philippe, no other batter from the Sixers got the momentum, with James Vince being the second top-scorer (26). For the Renegades, Mujeeb Ur Rahman picked up three wickets while conceding 29 in his quota of 4 overs.
In response, the Nic Maddinson-led side never really got going and got bundled out for a mere 115 in 19 overs to lose the contest by 34 runs. The senior batting duo of Aaron Finch (36) and Shaun Marsh (28) did stay for a while and added a crucial stand of 55 runs for the third wicket. But as soon as Hayden Kerr dismissed Marsh, the batting unit of Renegades fell like a pack of cards.
Ben Dwarshuis was the chief destroyer, bagging a remarkable four-wicket haul for just 17 runs in his quota of 4 overs, including a maiden. Apart from Dwarshuis, Kerr (2/30) and Sean Abbott (2/17) picked up two scalps each.
