Ricky Ponting explains how Virat Kohli can get his confidence back
Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting has joined the growing list of experts who have given their verdict on the much-talked-about poor form of Indian superstar Virat Kohli.
Notably, Kohli is going through a rough patch in international cricket and has been suffering from bad form for a long time, with his last international century coming in 2019.
Ponting reckoned that many players have gone through poor form in their career, and the best amongst them have found a way to comeback and it’s a matter of time before Kohli would return.
“I think if I was an opposition captain or an opposition player, I would be fearing playing an Indian team that has Virat Kohli in it more than I would be one that doesn’t have him in it,” said Ponting while speaking with Sanjana Ganesan on The ICC Review show.
“I know there have been some challenges for him, it’s been a difficult time. But every great player I have seen in this game has been through it at some stage, whether that’s a batsman or a bowler, they have all been through it. And somehow, the best (players) find a way to rebound and respond, and it’s only a matter of time before Virat does that,” added the former Aussie captain.
Further, the Tasmanian felt that India’s coaching hierarchy should try and instill the belief back in Kohli. Ponting said if he was in the management he would be reminding Kohli of his glory days and how he remained the number one batter for years.
“I will be going the other way. I’ll be telling him, ‘This is your spot, this is where you’re batting, it’s not going to change. Keep believing in yourself, keep putting in the hard work, keep believing what made you the best player in the world for a number of years – get back to those thoughts and the runs will come’,” Ponting added further.
