Shreyas Iyer’s back scans not promising; may not play Australia ODIs and the IPL
The result of Shreyas Iyer’s back scan is out, and it is not encouraging. As a result, he may not be able to play in the upcoming ODI series against Australia and may also miss the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Iyer is now a doubtful starter for both events. He will have to undergo some more injury tests and be treated by a specialist.
It is important to note that Iyer was previously ruled out of the ODI series against New Zealand in January due to a back injury. Rajat Patidar replaced him in the squad. The BCCI had issued a statement saying that he would be going to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for further assessment and management. Iyer’s injury resurfacing now raises questions about the functioning of the NCA, as this is not the first time such an injury has occurred.
It is expected that the selectors, who are currently present in Ahmedabad, will take a call regarding Iyer’s participation in the ODIs against Australia.
Earlier, after Ravindra Jadeja’s dismissal in the ongoing fourth Test against Australia, Iyer did not come out to bat, and Srikar Bharat took the field instead. It was later revealed that Iyer complained of lower back pain after the third day’s play and had gone for scans.
“Shreyas Iyer complained of pain in his lower back following the third day’s play. He has gone for scans and the BCCI Medical Team is monitoring him,” the BCCI statement on Sunday morning read.
As far as the match is concerned, India put up a strong response to Australia’s first innings total of 480. Middle-order batter Virat Kohli played a crucial role in this, scoring his 28th Test ton and just missing out on a double century as he fell on 186.
The Australian openers were unbeaten at 3/0 and still trail by 88 runs at the end of Day 4.
