NZ vs AUS: Australia skipper Pat Cummins confirms his playing XI for the Wellington Test

Australia's playing XI for the first Test against New Zealand announced

As Australia wraps up a successful T20I series against New Zealand with a remarkable 3-0 sweep, all eyes now turn to the highly anticipated Test battle set to commence this week on Thursday, February 29. While the T20I series was crucial in preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup, cricket enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the Test series, known for its unparalleled intensity and strategic gameplay.

Steve Smith to continue as an opener

In preparation for the first Test against New Zealand in Wellington, Australian skipper Pat Cummins has confirmed the playing XI, with Steve Smith set to open the batting with Usman Khawaja. Since the retirement of David Warner earlier this year, Smith has taken on the role of opener, showcasing a mix of performances during Australia’s recent Test series against the West Indies. Despite some ups and downs, the experienced right-hander notably played a valuable knock of 91 not out in the second innings versus Windies in Brisbane.

Joining Smith and Khawaja in the top six are all-rounders Cameron Green and Mitch Marsh, adding depth and versatility to Australia’s batting lineup. As expected, Nathan Lyon is the lone spinner in the starting XI.

With both teams vying for dominance in the Test arena, the upcoming series holds significant importance, not only for securing crucial points in the WTC standings but also for asserting dominance in the trans-Tasman rivalry.
