New Zealand star Daryl Mitchell rested for second South Africa Test and Australia T20Is
New Zealand‘s versatile all-rounder Daryl Mitchell is set to sit out the upcoming second Test against South Africa and the impending T20I series versus Australia as he aims to recuperate from a lingering foot injury.
Daryl Mitchell given a much-needed break
Mitchell’s absence poses a significant setback for the Blackcaps, given his pivotal role across all formats. The team management remains hopeful that the injury isn’t severe, as Mitchell has been diligently managing it over the past six to seven months. However, head coach Gary Stead emphasizes the necessity for Mitchell to undergo a thorough recovery phase at this juncture.
“Daryl’s been battling a foot injury for the last six or seven months,” Stead conveyed to the New Zealand Herald. “It’s really tough because there’s not a lot of breaks in the next wee while, so we thought this gives us nearly three weeks to give him the chance for the best recuperation from it.”
Acknowledging the uncertainties surrounding Mitchell’s recovery, Stead underscores the importance of ensuring his long-term fitness. Mitchell’s absence will be keenly felt, particularly considering his significant contributions to New Zealand’s batting prowess.

No replacement named for the second Test against South Africa
Although no replacement has been named for Mitchell in the Test squad, New Zealand are poised to shuffle their lineup. The inclusion of uncapped pacer Will O’Rourke is on the cards, with plans to elevate Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner up the batting order to accommodate the alteration.
While Mitchell’s absence is undoubtedly a loss for New Zealand, the team remains focused on managing his injury effectively to bolster his prospects for a sustained return to the field ahead of the all-important T20 World Cup 2024.
