CWC 2023 [WATCH]: Babar Azam poses with Hyderabad Stadium ground staff, gifts Pakistan’s jersey
Pakistan scripted history by chasing down a mammoth target of 345 against Sri Lanka in Match 8 of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at Hyderabad on Tuesday. Wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan shone brightly in the match for Pakistan, delivering a remarkable innings of 131 runs, effectively anchoring his team’s historic run-chase.
After the match, Pakistani skipper Babar Azam and Co. gifted their national jersey to the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium’s ground staff, as a token of love and posed with them for a picture to express their gratitude.
It’s worth highlighting that the Green Team contested their warmup matches and the initial two ODI World Cup fixtures in Hyderabad. The International Cricket Council (ICC) shared a video on their official Instagram handle of Babar’s heartwarming gesture and captioned it as: “A fabulous gesture from Babar Azam to the Hyderabad ground staff.”
Pakistan’s historic run-chase
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Sri Lanka, led by Kusal Mendis‘ brilliant 122 and anchored by Sadeera Samarawickrama‘s century, posted a formidable total of 344/9.
Pakistan’s chase had a somewhat discouraging beginning, with Imam-ul-Haq (1) and Babar (10) falling during a slow start in the starting phase, with Dilshan Madushanka dismissing both the star batters.
However, Abdullah Shafique (113) and Rizwan (131 not out) established a solid foundation with a remarkable 176-run partnership for the third wicket. Nonetheless, they executed a spectacular six-wicket victory, completing the highest-ever chase in the tournament’s history.
