BAN vs SL: Kusal Mendis walks off the field due to chest pain; later hospitalised

Kusal Mendis walks off the field following chest pain

Sri Lanka batter Kusal Mendis was hospitalised after being taken off the field, experiencing chest pain on Day 1 of the ongoing second Test against Bangladesh. According to media reports, Mendis is currently under observation at a hospital in Dhaka.

The incident took place minutes before the lunch interval during the 23rd over. Mendis, who was positioned in the slip cordon, appeared in some sort of discomfort and lay down on the field. The Sri Lankan medical staff immediately attended to him, and the Lankan player left the playing area holding his chest soon after.

Notably, in the initial update, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) doctor Manzur Hossain Chowdhury said Mendis had to be taken to the hospital for ‘proper diagnosis and better management’. As per Chowdhury, the Moratuwa-born cricketer was suffering from dehydration leading into the match, which could be a reason behind his uneasiness.

“Mendis had to be taken to the hospital for proper diagnosis and better management of his condition,” said Chowdhury, as quoted by the Times of India.

“He may suffer from dehydration, which could be a reason behind his discomfort. It might be gastritis as a possible reason for his discomfort. Once the diagnosis is completed, it will be possible to tell the thing exactly,” he added.

As of now, it is unclear at this stage how long Mendis will be in the hospital and regarding his participation in the ongoing Dhaka Test. The right-handed batter had scored a solid half-century in the first innings of the opening Test, followed by a quick 48 in the second essay, helping Sri Lanka draw the contest.
