Steve Smith breaks Sachin Tendulkar and Joe Root's Test records

In a masterclass of batting, Steve Smith showcased his brilliance once again, scoring his 34th Test century on Day 2 of the fourth Test against India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Smith’s knock not only reinforced his stature as one of the greatest Test players but also etched his name in the history books by surpassing records held by Sachin Tendulkar and Joe Root.

A pivotal knock

Smith’s century came at a crucial moment for Australia, who were teetering at 299 for 6. Together with skipper Pat Cummins, Smith stitched a crucial 112-run partnership that propelled Australia to a commanding total. He brought up his hundred in 167 balls, adorned with nine fours and three sixes, before eventually falling for a well-crafted 140 to Indian pacer Akash Deep.

Breaking records

With this century, Smith now holds the record for the most Test centuries (11) against India, surpassing England’s Joe Root, who had 10. What’s more impressive is that Smith achieved this milestone in just 43 innings, further cementing his reputation as a player for the big stage.
